This slowness occurred despite the machine having a still respectable 2.8 GHz Core i7 processors. Many seemingly simple tasks would cause the OS to beachball, which generally made me not want to use the computer. As I said, I don't really use this computer all that much so would be fine with an external or external/SSD combination where the speed is reasonable (doesn't need to be the absolute fastest possible).I have a Late 2009 Core i7 27” iMac that was starting to feel old. The main reason to do the internal SSD option (no external drive) is that it's really fast, but I've seen some suggestions that an external drive can be just as fast.

Is it possible to 'turn off' the internal spinning drive (so I don't have to open the case) and then create a solution where either a) I also give up on the SSD and use only the external for everything or b) create a new fusion drive or two-drive solution with the SSD and external drive? So seeing your comment gives me a glimmer of hope. The problem is that I just really don't want to open up my iMac because it just sounds too difficult/risky and I'd rather not pay someone else to do it either because I know that will only push the price up. I learned it's possible for about $500, more or less, to buy a 2TB SSD and replace the non-SSD drive with it. I don't use this computer all that much but paid a lot for it and so would like to figure out a reasonable way to get a few more years of use out of it. There appears to be a problem with the traditional (non-SSD) drive and I'm trying to figure out what to do to fix it. I have a late 2014 27" Retina iMac with a 3TB fusion drive.
